The Dictionary
Learn what certain words mean used in our videos, courses, along with the cannabis community that new growers want to be familiar with.

Agitate:
Definition: To stir up or mix liquid.
In The Chronic Method’s videos and Grow Course, we encourage growers to use air pumps and air stones for any size tank under 100 gallons. We also recommend using an aeromixer mini alongside airstones for tank sizes from 15 gallons – 75 gallons.
Burping:
Definition: The act of allowing air to enter and escape a certain object to evenly distribute air throughout the product.
We recommend using these turkey bags to burp finished flowers in if dealing with larger quantities.
Canopy:
Definition: The very top continuous layer of foliage of the plants.
Our goal is to keep our canopy as level as possible throughout its vegetation stage as well as flower. One of the best ways to manipulate that is to top taller plants down to the height of shorter plants. Topping promotes lateral & lower branches to come up and fill out the canopy with dense colas and tops. Trellising the canopy is another way to help fill out the canopy by spreading branches out you want them.
Cohesion:
Also known as “nutrient lock” is when particles stick to one another. In agriculture, cohesion occurs when water sticks to water. This is usually caused by an excess amount of salts and minerals in the soil that “bind” the soil particles, not allowing the roots to uptake any water or nutrients from the soil.
Make sure to flush your plants periodically to reduce the possibility of cohesion. Also, use products like Athena Cleanse that contains hypochlorous acid to help break down excess salts and minerals from fertilizers.
Drift
Drift is when small water and mixture particles from a chemical / fertigation sprayer is blown or has drifted over a space that was unintended to spray. This happenes often in outdoor agriculture due to unexpected winds in the air, for indoors it is usually from ventillation and circulation fans not being turned off when treating. Make sure to eliminate drift by turning off all your fans in the garden before spraying.
Fulvic Acid:
Fulvic acid is a yellow-brown substances found in natural material, it is also found in decaying plants and animals. It can be used in crop production to help increase nutrient uptake. Ful Power Fulvic Acid is our favorite prodoct to use for applyinng fulvic acids to out gardens due to its chemistry and how clean it is.
Fungicide:
Fungicides are products used to contol and eliminate plant diseases related to fungus. Athena IPM is one of our go-to products fungicides that also acts as an insecticide to control certain insects. We use it preventatively so there is no future issues.
Genotype:
The genetic makeup of a certain organism. Usually associated with Phenotype, an example of a genotype would represent a specic strain. (Ex. OG Kush is a different genotype than Runtz)
Check out different genotypes, strains, genetics, or whatever terminology you prefer here!
Insecticide:
Insecticides are products used to control a variety of insects in the garden. They can come in ready to use spray bottles, aersol cans, oils, and other concentrated forms where mixing with wsater is required. Again, Athena IPM is a wonderful prodect to use preventaively for a wide variety of insects, however it is also effective to use beneficial insects like predatory bugs.
Media:
“Growing Media” is the substance in which you decide to cultivate your plants in. Whether it’s soil, rockwool, coco coir, or any other substrate, “Media” is a broad term for all.
Pests:
Pests are ANY unwanted person, insect, or thing in the garden. You decide what a pest is. However, in the cannabis world pests are usually associated with insect, fungus, viruses, and other plant diseases. Check out our IPM videos and products we use for pest control in the garden!
pH:
pH stands for Power of Hydrogen. We measure pH to evaluate how acidic or basic our water solutions or run-off from the soil are. This is the most reliable and accurate pH meter that we use and stand by! Hanna Growline pH Meter
Phenotype:
A list of observable characteristics of each plant resulting from the interactions of its Genotype with the environment. If you plan on popping / hunting seeds, pay close attention to each phenotype and which ones look the healthiest or best. A proper hunt would be finishing each phenotype all the way through flower so you can observe proper structure, nose, aesthetic, and other characteristics each plant carries. Need seeds to start your pheno hunt? Click Here!
PPM's:
PPM’s stand for Parts Per Millions. PPM’s are typically the measurement of the amount of carbon particles in a certain substrate. How we test PPM’s is through run-offs after watering our plants. Watch here how to take a run-off and test for PPM’s!
Reverse Osmosis Water:
Reverse Osmosis Water is water that has been filtered removing pollutants, bacteria, chlorine & chloramines, and other particles leaving the water almost to its cleanest potential. The reason we use RO water is because it allows us to have more control over the nutrition we are giving to the plants. With unknown minerals and other particles in well or city water, it is hard to judge how to adjust a nutrient program without doing damage. Check out the Reverse Osmosis System we recommend using!
Run-Off:
Run-off in container pots is the excess water or nutrient solution draining from the bottom of the pot. We collect the run off to test for pH, PPM, and soil temperature. Watch how we do it here!
Target Temperatures / Humidity / CO2:
Target environments are specific perameters you are trying to maintian in order to achieve optimal growth. Cannabis loves sprecific ranges of temperature, humidity, C02, water temperature, and other factors that impact health and vitality in the plant. Environmental controllers are the best pieces of equipment to use when controlling environments.
